Granite Stains

If you happen to get a stain on your granite countertop, don't get too upset.  There are ways that it can be treated, and many of the home remedies are simpler than you may think. Keep in mind, however, that it is recommended that you consult your granite countertop professional before trying any of the following remedies to be sure that the type of granite, sealer, and polish they used for your counter is compatible. Also, if there is extensive, large areas of granite stains is is best to get professional removal done.

On any granite stain, first try warm water with mild dish washing liquid.  It is surprising how often this simple combination works. If this formula does not succeed, try the following universal granite stain mixture: 1 cup of flour, 1 to 2 tablespoons of dish washing liquid, and just enough water to create a paste.  Apply to the stain, cover with plastic wrap, and leave on overnight, then remove in the morning and rinse.

There are also specific granite stain removal formulas, depending on what the blemish is from:

Organic stains (such as fruit, tea, coffee stains) can be removed instantly with a solution of 12% hydrogen peroxide and 2 drops of ammonia (be sure to sponge away the residue)

Oil based stains (grease, cooking oil, milk) are brought out with 1 to 2 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide, 1 cup of flour, and enough water to make a paste. Cover with plastic and leave on overnight, then rinse in the morning. If this formula does not take up the stain, replace the hydrogen peroxide with a small amount of ammonia.

Wine or grape juice stains can be taken out of granite with a mixture of 1 cup of molding plaster and a small amount of bleach (enough to form a paste).  Allow the paste to remain on the stain for 30 minutes before removing with a damp sponge and rinsing.

Ink stains (marker) can be taken up, but you must consider the color the granite to know what to use.  For dark granite counters, a small amount of acetone (or paint thinner) applied in small circles with a clean rag works instantly. For light colored granite counters, hydrogen peroxide can help with ink.

After you are finished treating the stain and have wiped up the cleaner, be sure to rinse the area well and get all remaining residue off.  This is important because some of these strong chemicals, if left on the counter, can hurt the sealer or polish.
