Granite Countertops Price
Granite countertops are beautiful. They
provide your new or remodeled kitchen with a rich and
natural look that will virtually last forever. Of
course, with this beauty comes a high price
tag. Granite countertops are among the most expensive
material for kitchen countertops.
The reason for high granite countertop prices is due to
several factors. First, the stone must be mined from
the earth. Then, it must be cut into slabs or sheets
that are shipped to suppliers (often overseas,
depending on the type of granite). When an order is
placed, the supplier must cut the granite to the custom
size, including cutouts for sinks and range
tops. Finally, the granite countertops must be
professionally installed, fabricated, and polished.
The price of granite countertops vary. Granite
countertop prices generally start around $60 a square
foot, but can be less with discount granite countertops or
more with rare colors and patterns. The cost of
specific granite types is not based on quality or pattern
detail, but rather on supply and demand. Many
companies assign price to their granite based on a rating
system such as A, B, and C cost groups.
Group A granite countertops prices are higher and include
the more rare colors and stone designs such as blues
and reds. Group B granites are more affordable than
A, and include many of the popular green colors. Group
C granites are the least expensive, often including browns
and tans. When deciding which group to choose from,
remember that the ratings are not based on quality but
rather quantity. The granite color and pattern you
actually prefer may fall in a lower price group.
