Granite Countertop Care
One reason home owners choose granite
for their kitchen countertops is for their ease of
care. If proper care is given, granite
countertops will look and feel new for a several years.
Although granite is one of the hardest and toughest
materials available, it is still possible for it to become
damaged or blemished if it is not
properly cleaned and cared for.
Gentle, nonabrasive, and neutral cleaners should be used
for day to day care of granite countertops. Good
choices include stone soap (a special granite
countertop cleaner available at hardware stores or
online) or mild dishwashing liquid. Do not use
products that are acidic (such as vinegar, lemon,
or orange based products) because they can
cause discoloration and damage to the protective
sealer. Bleach, degreasers, abrasive scouring pads and
strong detergents should never be used either since they
can strip away granite's natural shine as well as etch,
scratch or pit the stone surface.
Cleaning granite countertops is as simple as
lightly washing with warm soapy water, rinsing, and
drying. No expensive products are necessary for
daily care. A clean, soft cloth (microfiber works
well) should always be used for granite counter top
care. The counters should also always be rinsed and
dried after washing. If using a stone soap cleaner,
only using it once a week is fine with damp cloth cleanings
in between. Remember to always dry your granite
counters after they have been washed and rinsed.
Granite countertop care involves more than just knowing how
to clean granite countertops. Preventing stains and
blemishes is equally as important. If there is a
spill on your granite counter, it should be wiped up
immediately to prevent staining and to preserve the color
and shine of your beautiful counter. Liquids
such as wines, juices, and sodas are acidic in nature and
can etch through the sealer. Coasters should always be used
for drinks, especially those prevoiusly mentioned since
they can dull or stain the surface. Be sure to rinse dishes
before piling them on granite counters. Use a cutting board
as a precaution to prevent scratches. Also, trivets or mats
should be used under hot dishes. Although
granite is resistant to heat, the color of polished
granite can be changed by it. Many kitchens do experience
granite coutertop stains or blemishes
from various causes but there are ways to remove
them depending on the specific cause.
